Year 9 Options

At The Bromfords School, we hold the belief that every student deserves a tailored curriculum that considers their unique needs, interests, and aspirations. Our personalised curriculum offerings empower students to develop the skills and gain the knowledge necessary to reach their full potential and effectively prepare for future academic success.  The booklet linked below outline the options process and has been designed to aid students and their parents in making decisions regarding their learning journey and selecting subjects that match their aspirations, skills, and needs.

All students are encouraged to have ambitious goals for their future beyond Year 11. It is important to note that the government expects students to continue their education until they reach the age of 18. This does not necessarily imply remaining in a traditional school setting; students have the option to continue their education or training after the age of 16 through a variety of means, including:

  • Full-time study at a school, college, or training provider •
  • Combining full-time work or volunteering with part-time education or training
  • Pursuing an apprenticeship

During the early stages of Year 9, students are given guidance to inform help them 'personalised' their curriculum. They study a 'Core Curriculum' which comprises of English Language and Literature, Maths, Science, Personal Development and Physical Education, as well as choosing four subjects to study from a 'Personalised Curriculum' from Year 10. The number of subjects students choose to study for their GCSEs will be reduced to three from September 2025. Students will receive five hours of their chosen subjects from the 'Personalised Curriculum'. They will sit their GCSEs at the end of Year 11.

The 'Personalised Curriculum' consists of Art, Business Studies, Computer Science, Dance, Drama, Food Technology, Film Studies, Geography, Health and Social Care, History, ICT, Modern Foreign Languages (French or Spanish from September 2024), Music, Photography, Physical Education (GCSE), Product Design, Religious Education, Statistics and Textiles. To broaden the opportunities for students, they are expected to select History or Geography as one of the subjects to study.

Furthermore, some students are expected to study a Modern Foreign Language (French or Spanish from September 2027) as part of their 'Personalised Curriculum'; they students will be expected to study History or Geography as well. The curriculum available during Years 10 and 11 has been crafted to maximise students' educational benefit and provide a broad and balanced curriculum, and numerous progression options into post-16 education or employment.
