Vaping
Vaping is the inhaling of a vapor created by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) or other vaping device. E-cigarettes are battery-powered smoking devices. They have cartridges filled with a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavourings, and chemicals. The liquid is heated into a vapor, which the person inhales. Devices come in all shapes and sizes as do the liquids that are vaped.
We have been alerted to an increased use of THC vapes and know of several cases where children have been hospitalised as a result of its use. In other parts of the country, children have collapsed as a result of the use of THC vapes. Upon investigation, some of the vapes were found to contain Spice which is a synthetic form of cannabis. However, the effects of Spice are much stronger and often unpredictable. It is also known as the ‘Zombie Drug’ due to the state that it can leave users in.
The fact is that very often when children buy vapes they will not actually know what substances are contained in the vape.
Below is a link to advice from the NHS about how to talk to your child about drugs. It also has a link within the page to take you to Frank which is the national drugs information website.

THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces the high sensation. It can be consumed by smoking cannabis. It’s also available in vapes, oils, edibles, tinctures, capsules, and more.
CBD (cannabidiol) is the non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant and is used for some medical treatments.
Clearly the two chemicals are very different.
THC causes temporary side effects, such as:
- increased heart rate
- coordination problems
- dry mouth
- red eyes
- slower reaction times
- memory loss
- anxiety
However, high THC use may be connected to long-term negative psychiatric effects. This is especially true for adolescents who consume large amounts of THC.
